Rediscovering the PAF Sound
Deel
In 1957, the Gibson PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucker redefined electric guitar tone, delivering a rich, noise-free sound that continues to inspire players across genres. Developed by engineer Seth Lover, the humbucker addressed the hum and interference issues of single-coil pickups. Lover’s design, with two coils wound in opposite polarity, created the now-famous “humbucking” effect that resulted in a warmer, fuller sound with balanced lows, mids, and highs.
While each PAF had slight variations due to materials like Alnico magnets and butyrate bobbins, these differences only added to their mystique. Originally installed in iconic Gibson models like the Les Paul Standard and ES-335, PAF pickups became synonymous with the sound of rock and roll.
Today, original PAFs are rare and prized by collectors. Wizz Pickups, based in Croatia, has taken up the challenge of recreating the PAF humbucker to exacting standards.
Wizz pickups are made with era-correct materials, including butyrate bobbins, plain enamel wire, and hand-magnetized Alnico magnets. These materials are chosen carefully to mirror those used in vintage PAF pickups, helping Wizz achieve a similar tonal response.
Using vintage-correct materials such as butyrate bobbins, plain enamel wire, and hand-magnetized Alnico magnets, Wizz pickups offer a tonal response remarkably close to that of the original PAFs.
Ronnie’s Guitars is proud to be a dealer of Wizz Pickups, which I believe are the best modern recreations available. Often chosen as replacements for original ’50s and ‘60s Gibson pickups, Wizz pickups bring the legendary PAF tone available for everyone.
