This is a '55 Fender Stratocaster from the Fender Custom Shop. It’s a hardtail, meaning the guitar does not have a tremolo system. Although this isn’t something you see very often, the hardtail Strat has been available since 1954, just like the standard version.
A hardtail offers more sustain and twang than a tremolo-equipped guitar, which (in my view) makes it sound a bit better. It’s also easier to set up and holds its tuning more reliably.
The guitar features a fairly chunky U-profile neck, is set up with low action, and plays beautifully.
The hand-wound ’55 Strat pickups in this guitar sound superb—very open and full, with lovely mids. The bridge pickup has a touch less high end, so the guitar doesn’t sound overly sharp and is very usable.
It’s in excellent condition with an ultra-thin “flash coat” nitro finish that already shows some light checking and a bit of buckle rash (see photos). It comes in its original case with certificate, floor traveller with all the specs, strap, bridge cover, and paperwork.
The guitar is wonderfully light, weighing only 3.1 kg.
