A stunning lightweight Gibson Les Paul Goldtop from the Custom Shop. This is a reissue of a ’56 Goldtop with an ABR-1 bridge. Built in 2024, the guitar is still in mint condition.
The golden nitro finish on this Goldtop is spot on. Some Goldtops appear dull or overly green, but this guitar boasts the deep golden hue that was used for Les Pauls in the 1950s.
Another noteworthy feature is the placement of the Gibson logo, which in the ’50s was positioned slightly lower on the headstock of Goldtops compared to other models. This detail is faithfully replicated on this guitar, highlighting Gibson’s ongoing efforts to make these reissues as historically accurate as possible.
After a brief period with the trapeze tailpiece in ’52–’53 and the wraptail in ’53–’55, the 1956 Goldtop with the ABR-1 bridge emerged as the best option for P90-equipped models. The ABR-1 not only allows for precise adjustments but, in my opinion, also delivers the best tonal quality with this bridge.
This guitar features a fairly chunky C-shaped neck, though not as thick as some other Gibson Custom Shop models I’ve encountered.
